Raising Awareness and Support for Perimenopausal Women and Their Loved Ones

Honoring Those We’ve Lost:

The emotional and physical toll of perimenopause often goes unnoticed, leaving many women feeling isolated and unheard. The heartbreaking loss of a talented and beloved singer last year, who struggled with the often-overlooked challenges of perimenopause, underscores the urgent need for open, compassionate conversations and supportive communities.

This issue is not just a “women’s issue.” It impacts partners, families, and friends, and ripples through the fabric of our communities.

As a menopause coach and founder of The Healers Yurt, my mission is clear: to ensure that no woman suffers in silence, and to empower families, workplaces, and healthcare providers to support women during this critical transition. We cannot afford another loss like this. It’s time to understand, educate, and act.

Understanding Perimenopause

Perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, brings with it significant hormonal fluctuations. Women experience a wide range of symptoms—from mood swings and anxiety to insomnia and physical discomfort. For instance, up to 70% of women experience hot flashes, which can disrupt daily life and sleep.

During this time, women face additional challenges such as familial obligations, career demands, and societal pressures to "keep it all together." But these struggles are not merely a “normal part of ageing”; they are legitimate health concerns that deserve recognition, compassion, and care.

The Impact of Silent Suffering

The tragic loss of the singer is not unique. Countless women suffer through perimenopause without a safe space to voice their experiences. A study found that over 60% of women in perimenopause feel they cannot discuss their symptoms with anyone due to fear of judgment or dismissal. This silence often leads to emotional distress, isolation, and a feeling of hopelessness.

When women withdraw from social engagements and hobbies, it deepens the sense of loneliness, sometimes leading to depression and anxiety. We must understand and address these challenges, fostering a supportive environment where women can be open about their struggles without shame.

Supportive communities are essential for women navigating perimenopause. Families, friends, and colleagues must take the initiative to educate themselves about this life stage. Understanding the emotional and psychological impacts of perimenopause creates an environment where women can share their experiences and seek the help they need without fear of judgment.

Support groups, both in-person and online, are invaluable in this regard. They provide a safe space for women to connect, share their stories, and realize they are not alone. This sense of belonging can ease feelings of isolation and encourage healing.

Raising Awareness and Educating

Awareness is key to shifting the narrative around perimenopause. Research shows that awareness initiatives can help women better identify their symptoms, allowing for earlier intervention and support. In workplaces, schools, and medical settings, integrating education on perimenopause can create a culture of empathy and understanding. This cultural shift will ensure that women are met with compassion and practical solutions when they seek help.

Healthcare professionals play a pivotal role in addressing perimenopausal symptoms. Perimenopause impacts not only physical health but also mental well-being. Incorporating mental health screenings into routine checkups is essential, as studies show that up to 40% of women seeking care during this period report experiencing depression linked to hormonal changes.

A holistic approach to treatment, ranging from lifestyle adjustments to counselling and hormone therapies, is key. Empowering women with the knowledge of their options can help them manage their symptoms and regain control over their lives.

Advocating for Mental Health Support

At The Healers Yurt, we recognize that the intersection of perimenopause and mental health cannot be overlooked. We advocate for dedicated mental health resources to support women through this transition. By collaborating with mental health organizations, we ensure a comprehensive approach to care that addresses both the physical and emotional needs of women during perimenopause.

Our coaching programs are designed to help women navigate this transition with empathy, validation, and effective coping strategies that enhance mental well-being. We believe no woman should suffer in silence or feel misunderstood during such a critical time.

Fostering Open Conversations

Breaking the silence around perimenopause is the first step toward healing. We believe there should be spaces where women feel safe to share their experiences, knowing they will be met with compassion. Open dialogues help families, friends, and communities grow in understanding and solidarity.

Now is the time for workplaces to become hubs of awareness and support—instituting wellness programs focused on women’s health, cultivating a culture of empathy and care, and ensuring that perimenopausal women are seen and heard.

Through raising awareness, providing support, and simply being there for the women in our lives, we can and will make a lasting difference in helping women navigate perimenopause with grace, dignity, and strength.
